I'll try again since the site owners have ignored my previous post on this subject.

Has anyone actually got the free trial working? If so, which payment provider(s) have you used?

I understand that it must be a recurring payment provider (though I don't understand why that is the case). There's no indication as to which payment providers this recurring piece will work with. It certainly doesn't work with the PayPal provided (tried it) which I'd have expected given the popularity of PayPal.

My listed providers are:

PayFast
2checkout
Authorize
EWay
Cardsave
Buckaroo
Cash
Bank Transfer
PayPal

It may not be possible for me to use some of them, but almost 2 years after puchase I've still not been able to go live and I'm willing to try anything before I ditch this software and move to something else.

Hi,

The trial feature is available only for recurring payment options, due to payment gateway limitation.
The payment gateways like PayPal or Stripe allows trial periods only with recurring payment.

We offer 2 recurring payment plugin on the site, one for PayPal and one for Stripe.
You can find them on http://www.cmsjunkie.com/joomla_business_directory

Okay, now we might be getting somewhere. It would be worth updating the documentation to say these are additional cost addons and where to find them.

I bought both, but it looks like Stripe is no good. It is requesting credit card details on my site which, although it is https, is not a route I want to go down. I know it's possible to pass to Stripe's payment processing pages same as PayPal so that would be the preferred solution.

I'm running with PayPal Subscriptions only and have created a Package with Trial.I create a test business and run through the details and it appears as though it is asking for payment at the end:

It's not until you actually proceed to the payment page you can see that it's not actually taking any money at this time.

Looking at it from a customer's point of view, right up until the very end it appears as though they're going to be charged. This will put people off that final step. Some will believe if they click that Continue button they'll be billed instantly which is not the case. Even if the last page had text along the lines of "You have selected a package with a trial period. You will not be billed until the end of that trial period" it might give a bit of confidence.

Hi,

Thank you for your suggestion. We will find a solution to make this more suggestive for the end users.

Overall, what would be a far better approach that would not initially require any commitment to pay or having to provide payment details is the creation of a "One Time" Package alongside Lifetime, Fixed Period, Recurring etc. This would allow a user to sign up at a discounted/free rate, but then at the end of the period, not be able to select that package again. To continue they'd have to select/upgrade to a paid/full price package Simple, clean and easily understandable by the customer.
