Max listings on the search module settings is applicable only the the module is shown alone on the page without any search results.
If the module is shown on a search results page the setting is overridden by the search results shown.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly, I am looking to display a list of the 10 nearest listings from the searchers location, what would be the best method to achieve this? I am not 100% sure what your answer means.

Hi,

In order for the search module to filter by zip code or geo location the radius must be higher than 0. You can set the default search radius in the search module settings.
